Adult Discipleship Classes - Sundays 10:00 - 10:50 AM
We, at Ocean View, want to help you grow and develop in the new life that God has given you in Jesus Christ.
We believe that it is possible to live in the presence and power of God right now. The good news that Jesus proclaimed was far more than the minimal entrance requirements for getting into heaven when you die. Through Jesus, we can have a relationship with God that continues to grow and develop through the years. We can become progressively more and more like Jesus as we walk with Him each day. That means that we can begin to think and feel what Jesus would think and feel if He were in our place, and consequently we can begin to do what Jesus would do.
As you read the New Testament, you come to understand that this growth or transformation is a normal, expected part of our walk with Christ. But, it is not automatic. It doesn’t just happen, though it is always a matter of grace.
One well-known Christian writer has used the analogies of a motorboat, a raft, and a sailboat to describe this spiritual formation process. He points out that in a motorboat we’re in charge. We determine how fast we’re going to go and in what direction. Some people approach spiritual life this way. They think, “If I’m just aggressive enough, I can make transformation happen on my own.” But, that doesn’t work. Other people go to the opposite extreme and drift along like a raft – doing absolutely nothing to further their growth. There are too many commands in scripture for anyone to think that we’re called to be totally passive. The third approach is that of a sailboat. Here we don’t move unless the wind moves us. We can’t control the wind. We can’t manufacture the wind. But, there is a role for us to play. A good sailor will discern, “Where’s the wind blowing? How should I set the sails?” Jesus talks about the Spirit blowing like the wind. Spiritual formation is like sailing.
One of the ways we desire to help you “set your sails” for spiritual formation is by providing Bible Study groups on Sunday morning. In the adult area, we offer studies that are both co-ed, as well as gender specific studies. There are a wide range of ages represented. And, you have the option of a topical or verse-by-verse study. Regardless of what you’re looking for, we should have a place for you.
Located just outside the sanctuary in the foyer is a large Welcome / Information Counter. Each Sunday morning there are friendly, helpful individuals here just waiting to help you find the class that is right for you. Hope to see you soon!
