“Ask Your Neighbor” Launch

In church this past Sunday we saw a video which illustrated one way to have a conversation with a neighbor about the needs or challenges he/she faces on an on-going basis.  Sitting across the desk is one way, around the water cooler or in the lunch room is another setting you can use.  The point is that your neighbor can be your coworker, fellow student, geographic neighbor, Bridge partner, or another gym rat.  Another video illustration is coming this Sunday.
The goal is to find out what needs exist among various segments in the community.  We’ve talked with some community leaders and now we want to hear from individuals.  What are people wrestling with?  It could be finances, relationships, a difficult boss, children acting out, aging parents, transportation, an on-going illness, depression—you never know what you will hear.  People may remain fairly guarded with their answers, or they may surprise you with their candor.  One thing’s for sure, they probably will not bite you.
You may ask your question in slightly different ways, depending upon the circumstance, age, your personal style, or how well you know the person.  Examples: “What is the greatest challenge you face on an on-going basis?”  “What’s difficult for you in life right now?”  “If you could bring calm to one area of your life, what would it be?”  “What needs are you having a tough time getting met?”  “Day in and day out, what’s the hardest thing you have to deal with?”  “If help was genuinely offered, what kind could you use in your life right now?”  All of these try to get at the same thing—the discovery of the needs and challenges of those around us.  You may also come up with your own way of asking the question.
Next week I’ll talk about the handouts we’ll give out on April 20, and/or ways on-line you can report your findings to the church.  In the meantime, be praying for an opportunity between April 20 and April 30 to contact your neighbor.  Ask the Lord who He would have you meet with.  It could be a very holy moment as you, your neighbor, and our Lord gather to talk about matters of the heart.
